Some people are interested in how things are made. Part of art is magic, the other is well-developed technique. This project was mostly magic.

This was an especially fun project for me, because when I took the commission I had no idea how I would complete it. The art will be mounted on board and framed without glass. The client wanted lots of texture, and I had other artwork and elements to coordinate with.

People always ask me where I get the inspiration to create my art. I never have an answer to that question, because truly inspiration is everywhere. I had a dream about this one, and I saw myself driving to the fabric store, and coming home and using the fabric that I purchased. I wasn't clear on how to do it until I started.

I did go to the fabric store and wandered around until I found this lacy fabric that said "me! buy me!". I know it sounds crazy. When I got home I mixed up some texture paste with some acrylic paint, and squeegeed the paste through the lace onto the surface. Then I pulled the lace up, leaving this lovely pattern. I highlighted the leaf pattern with a white gold iridized paint, then glazed the whole surface several times until I got the patina I was looking for.

I painted the landscape last. The image is sealed with four coats of varnish to protect the surface.
